I suggest the Oasis book, or Tony Attwood's book on Asperger's.  By the time you're done reading either, you either had 100s of red flags you identified with, and you KNOW (don't need anyone else to tell you if it's you, you KNOW) or not.  It's something you feel.  Their father can't see it, bc it's more like an overall experience.  So hard to explain it in a nutshell, these books really do the best job....

Gosh, there are so many possible symptoms and severities and as an adult, the list is different than as a child.  Autism is considered a spectrum for this reason.  A severely autistic kiddo might have an ability that a less severely autistic child doesn't have. 

In my own case, I have a sensory imbalance, I don't make eye contact, I replay scripts instead of acctually interacting with people I don't know well, I miss social cues, I perseverate, I stim... and the list goes on..

Billy - can you provide a little more info?  Are you asking about how an adult can raise their own indicators which may indicate AS-specific tendencies?  The method of self-evaluation often involves mitigating some paranoia.

Ask yourself questions like, "am I average or above average intelligence?", "do I have trouble making small talk?", "am I a good reciprocal conversationalist?", "do I use gestures properly?", "do I 'connect' with someone in conversation or am I just talking?".

I agree with someone below who stated various children with Asperger's often present with different sides of it.  It is a social emotional world view that is atypical, so depending on the child's personality, it may display in different manners. I"m currently reading my 5th book on the subject, definitely the best one, by Tony Attwood, the complete guide to Asperger's SYndrome.  I still don't have a complete grip on understanding how to quicklky describe this "disorder" ( I prefer to call it another personality type) briefly, after reading 5 books on it.....  Read as much as you can, it's fascinating.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't know that I have Asperger Syndrome unless someone diagnose me.

Self-diagnose and knowing your own ability does come in handy.

For my opinion, it hard for phys examiner to diagnose you unless you start telling them why you have Asperger Syndrome or other problem.

Most of the basic examination question are even on whether you hear voice, someone is watching you, not knowing what date, playing back memorized number, and administer a "IQ" test on logic.

None of the IQ test does determine if the person have Asperger Syndrome.

The state and federal are administering it as a factor to determine if the person is having problem with Asperger Syndrome or autistic.

I have Asperger Syndrome and still having problem inspite of my high intelligence.

The first thing I noticed was when my grandson started kindergarten.  I would drop him off and wait in the car till the teacher let the kids inside.  Other kids would run around and play while my little guy would just stand in one place with his head down and ignore what was going on around him.  When he did homework everything had to be in order and his attention span was poor.  It took him forever to do some things.  He was very smart and had a great vocabulary.  He was fascinated with a light we had.  It took a year or two till we realized he had aspergers.  My other grandkids didn't live near me so I only heard what was going on with them.  I think the first noticeable thing with Max was he had horrible temper tantrums - lots and he was brilliant.   Jadey is just about to be tested for aspergers, but teachers and others have noticed signs and we're pretty sure she has it.  She was always a smart girl and quite different.  She was fascinated with animals and liked to pretend she was one.  She had a problem with how clothes felt on her, I think she hated socks and shoes, for instance.  Their mom could tell you more and I'll ask her to.   I forgot the flapping.  She has been flapping her hands for years, but hardly ever does anymore.  

My child with Asperger's spoke very early.  She was sentencing by 10-months. 

She has social delays, such as not having the ability to give appropriate body space when talking, interrupting conversations and she gets upset easily when a conversation does not go her way.

She is 14 years old now and has come a long way, but we need to consistently make sure she continues to learn appropriate social behaviors.

She also started to flick her hands at the age of 2 years old and pick her nails.  Her nails are now long and beautiful.  She became aware of her differences in Middle School and has worked hard to "fit in".

Billy, every person I know has a quirk or two. Could it be that we all have a form of Asperger's?

Each child is different and may exhibit symptoms uniquely. My children were very different when they first showed signs of having Asperger's. This is what I observed:

1. Difficulty understanding abstract concepts and idioms. Takes things literally.

2. Poor eye contact.

3. Dulled affect.

4. Difficulty potty training.

5. Unable to read other people's facial expressions or voice cues that relay emotional state, such as anger or sadness.

6. Lack of empathy.

7. Speech delay.

8. Anxiety from changes in routine.

9. Sleep difficulties.

10. Obsessive interest in one or two topics. Becomes an expert on these and is unable to discuss anything else.

11. Communicates better with adults than with peers.

12. Extreme sensitivity to loud noises, lights, textures, tastes, or smells.

This is a short list of challenges that were a red flag for me. Pediatricians should have a comprehensive list of the symptoms for use in evaluating children even during the first year of life.
