What do you think about personal genetic testing? Have you tried it?

debate, breast cancer, heart attack, tests, ethics, genetic testing, genetic

There's a debate going on about the value and ethics of companies like 23andMe, Navigenics, and GenePartner that perform genetic testing for consumers. Some of these tests claims to give you your probabilty of a heart attack, breast cancer, or other conditions. Some, like GenePartner, even claim to help match you a mate. Has anyone on Trusera done this? What do you think of it?

Genertic testing is definitely a good idea for cancer. It can make the difference between death or cure to actual prevention, with some cancers. It is really important for women ...

Genertic testing is definitely a good idea for cancer. It can make the difference between death or cure to actual prevention, with some cancers. It is really important for women who had a mother, many aunts or sisters with breast cancer. Another time is when a very young member of a family has an unusual cancer. In those cases, it may be genetically or environmentally related and the other family members are at risk. I would defintely have genetic testing done because my life might depend on it.

Hello! The Chicago Tribune has a report saying that most of these tests are unnecessary, and just good marketing. I mentioned it in one of my posts today.

I have not done this and would not want to. I sure could use a life partner of my own, but it is better to match on financial and spiritual values than genetic compatibility. I feel God gives each of us an appointed time, so I'd rather not worry about it. In fact, worrying about it could be unhealthy.

The main issue is privacy. Medical information can't be shared with individuals or agencies outside the medical establishment, but it can be shared with clinics, HMO's, and other insurance entities you may try to do business with. Genetic information could be just cause for an increase in premiums or even denial of service. Knowing the pathological risks you may carry in your genes just isn't worth the price.
