Journal Bike Commuting in Seattle

Want to save money, lower stress, and increase your fitness all for 20 minutes of time out of your day?  Try bike commuting.  My normal commute by bus an hour, twenty minutes by car, and about an hour to an hour and ten minutes by bike.  With biking, though, I get two workouts a day for the extra twenty minutes a day.  Oh, and you do risk death.  Did I mention stress relief?

Maybe I am rude for mentioning this, but did have an experience in it many years ago when an office roommate rode her bike to and from work. Having to work in the same room with her was unbearable and nobody wanted to say anything, so the office manager did it and it felt very awkward - but afterward you could usually stand to work in the room. Right now I just want to see if I can still ride a bike. It's been years now and hope to be able to borrow a bike from my brother in CA to find that I can still do it. I can just feel the air on my face -----

I work from home (yeah!), so the commute is pretty simple, but I've been trying to ride my bike to everything in about a 5-mile radius. It's often as fast as driving (and finding parking), I've found. Baby showers, lunches with friends, trips down to the farmers' market--I'm doing it all by bike. The beginning of the rainy season stopped me for a couple of weeks, but I decided to get over it and put a raincoat on. It's been fine. (Thank goodness for fenders!) So HeyJudeSeattle, don't be so hard on yourself for the missed hour-long commutes, but consider, instead, just jumping on your bike for those quick trips to the store... Ride on!

I've been biking to work as much as I can - I work 3 days a week 5.5 miles from home, so 11 miles total (about 55 minutes on a good day). I wish I was faster, but it's a hilly route! It does feel good to accomplish this. If I bike 60-75% of the time I go to work, I get a gift certificate, but for me it's more the challenge than the $$$. I think it's hard to balance a baby and biking - it does take a lot more time... but it is pretty relaxing too. Plus I get my workout out of the way for the day...

Okay, an honest update to this eager pro-biking blog. It seems my thirst for bike commuting is inversely proportional to my need to spend time with our new baby. The end result is that I haven't bike commuted all summer! There was a study recently by University of Pittsburgh that showed that men lost 3 and half-hours off their workout once they became parents. (Women lost 90 minutes.) So, well 3 and half hours was probably my entire pre-baby workout. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/05/fashion/05Fitness.html?ex=1342152000&en=c9a34a0ab7c4e7f1&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink At least I have the backing of scientific rigor to support my own laziness!
