I woke up on Saturday morning to the confusing news that something had happened overnight with John Edwards, and it was bad. At the grocery store, I bought a New York Times and discovered that he'd confessed to an affair in 2006 and was denying having a child with the woman.
My first thought: I want my money back. I really liked John Edwards. I like the hometown boy makes good story, the central focus on poverty, keeping Katrina and New Orleans in the news. I liked the spirit of his campaign, most of the time. I liked how he stuck by his wife as she battled breast cancer, and she by him.
Now, I feel used. He had an affair. She helped cover it up. At first blush, it feels like he's "just like the rest of them." I feel exploited by him...and, frankly, a little by her. She KNEW in 2006, too. And, yet, the two of them sold America a stand by your women story that was false at its core.
