Journal Not Strep!

I came down with a sore throat, extreme tiredness, and a really nasty, grassy taste in my mouth recently.  I scheduled a doctor's appointment and googled "bad taste in mouth," not expecting the results to be particularly worthwhile. (They were'nt, though it does provide a lot of good reasons to go to the doctor.)

I was worried about Strep because I was recently exposed to it, and with a baby at home and one on the way, I didn't want the whole family getting sick.

I went to my naturopath and learned some interesting things:

1. I don't have Strep. There's a nasty sore throat virus going around the Seattle area.

2. The strep in your mouth is different from the strep that causes difficulty in pregnancy.  Strep A (Streptococcus pyogenes) is the kind that causes strep throats and many other things.  I could have infected my wife, but, according to my naturopath, it can't be transmitted through the umbilical cord to our unborn child.

3. They worry about Step A in kids as, untreated, it can lead to rheumatic and scarlet fever in kids.

4. They are concerned about Strep B (Streptococcus agalactiae) with pregnant women because, to quote Wikipedia, it "can also colonize the intestines and the female reproductive tract, increasing the risk for premature rupture of membranes and transmission to the infant."

Anyway, she gave me a bunch of stuff to boost my immune system, and I'm back on the mend!
