Winter Shopping
Before I begin: 2008 on the bike looks like this:
Week 1: 40 miles
Week 2: 55 miles
Week 3: 60 miles
Week 4, this week, is looking good so far. Over the weekend, I finally received some winter gear that I ordered from World Cycling Productions. Before I get into its efficacy, a note about World Cycling Productions. My guess is, they are a well-run outfit with some good deals but my experience personally was horrible. I loaded up my cart after some serious checking and double-checking between them, Amazon, Buy.com, Competitive Cyclist, etc, etc. The Craft base layers were hard to find, but WCP listed them on sale. After sifting through each option, I had to further choose from what was available, being that many were out of stock. Finally, I placed a sizable order and paid for overnight shipping. The next day, I got a call from them saying over half my order was out of stock and would not be in until next year's models in 2009. Then they offered similar items in different colors. When I conceded that option, I was told they would be shipped in a few days. I had to remind them I'd already paid for overnight shipping. Long story short, I got 20% of the items I originally purchased online. What a complete waste of time.
Regardless, I did find a close-out sale at a Nike store, where I found comparable base layers for 45% off. I combined those with the Craft Windstopper Jacket and lo and behold, I got the same functionality for roughly half the price.
And just in time. Yesterday, the temperature dropped to the low 30's and in the 20 mile roundtrip to school and back, I encountered rain, hail and light snow. But I am happy to report the equipment kept me warm and dry. Well worth the shopping drama.
