Journal Slackin' in Spin Class

Today's my spin day. I always go Wednesdays and Saturdays, I often go on Sundays, too, and then whenever I get a text from someone in the class asking me to join them. It's a fun - albeit weird - way to socialize and meet people. Immediately you know one thing about them: They care about their health. Yes, we all have bad habits, too (I am not ready to tell you mine), but we're making strides toward a healthy lifestyle. So we already have something in common. Oddly enough, most of the regulars are either in education or they're nurses. Hmmm, I wonder what that says about the stress level of those professions?

My favorite instructor teaches on Wednesdays. D. is funny, and she offers a call and response-type class. It's fun and gets you involved, and it has the added benefit of making the hour go by faster. I always take the same bike: in the back of the room, far right side, near the door. I feel most comfortable here because nobody can stare at my butt for an hour (although it is a great butt) and I can see everybody, including D. Well, I guess I'm a bit slow on the draw, because when I'm tired, or grumpy, or whatever, and I need to work out because I'm committed to working out, my intention is to somewhat slack. You know, not turn up the resistance as much as I could or as much as she tells us to, that sort of thing. Anyway, just like I can see D., she can see me. And she knows me well enough, has instructed me enough, that she'll call me out in front of the whole class: Andrea! I said CLOCKWISE, not counterclockwise! And the whole class laughs.

Now, that could piss some people off. But not me. Oh, I can get mad pretty darn easily, but I truly need someone to lovingly call me on my crap, particularly when it comes to exercise. There are two other instructors that holler at us, too, but they're not very nice about it. In fact, I've often thought, don't they know we're PAYING THEM? Geez.

Anyway, tomorrow I lift weights and it's hard to slack there, since it's computerized and will tell me how many sets and how many reps on each machine, and it will tell me if I haven't reached my goal. I don't like that reminder. By the way, today I got a note from the fitness coach who said in the past year I've logged 200 hours of cardio. Pretty good, eh? I wonder how many of those were slacker hours?
