Diabetes technology keeps flowing into the consumer pipline, which is a good thing considering the millions of people with diabetes out there. Whether or not these new techno gadgets will sink or swim in the diabetes market is another story.
There's the OmniPod insulin pump which inserts delivers insulin infusions without any tubes attached and boasts automated, virtually pain-free cannula insertion. You program your insulin dosages into its companion Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM), a handheld, wireless device with a glucose meter on board, as well as software to keep track of insulin delivery, blood glucose and carbohydrate records. For people with type 1 diabetes who don't like being 'tethered-via-tube' to an insulin pump, this is a convenient solution. Not only that, OmniPod and DexCom are working to integrate OmniPod's PDM with DexCom's continuous gluose monitoring system. Cool!
