Oh great, I work hard to keep fit, eat right (mostly), drink water and stay away from soda. But this past week new research hit that says a bigger bottom is linked with less metabolic disease. Subcutaneous, just-under-the-skin kind of fat that collects on the hips and bottom may help improve insulin sensitivity.
Turns out mice receiving transplants of this type of fat deep into their abdomens lost weight and their fat cells shrank -- with no changes in diet or activity levels. Can they make this magical formula into a fitness shake, please?
What makes this rounder bottom/less diabetes connection slightly bothersome is when I do gain some junk, it does not go to my trunk. I'm no pear-shape, fat tends to collect around my mid-section. Hmm ... the mid-section/visceral kind of fat that is known to raise the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
I'm already at risk enough for T1 diabetes. My immediate family history looks like a diabetes shotgun took a close-range shot -- the pellets haven't missed anyone thus far, except me. Now I carry the visceral fat factor, too. I'm glad I'm back training and dieting to run that 5K and shed those impossible five pounds!

Keep on truckin', Bev. You've outrun the disease so far. Keep up the hard -- I know, it's hard -- work! Jacki
