Whole wheat or white bread ... it's all the same to a Type 2
My niece was walking around the kitchen today searching for a loaf of white bread. In my self-righteous Auntie-tone, I told her white bread is for the birds and she should be eating whole wheat instead. A slice of Wonder would never pass through my lips, but I'll pop a chocolate-covered toffee any day. I'm a total hypocrite.
But is whole wheat that much better? Not necessarily to a person with Type 2 diabetes. Jenny Ruhl, a blogger over at Diabetes Update, just spotted a newly published study that says whole wheat, wheat bran and rye bread (allegedly healthier breads) raised blood glucose in type 2s as much as that evil white bread. I'm curious what the comparative glycemic index scores are for each of the breads ... the abstract doesn't say.
Sorry Trina.
Love,
Your know-it-all Aunt Bev
