Explaining ADHD Medication to Your Child

Child taking medication

When my son began taking medication for his ADHD at the age of 6, I didn't know how best to explain to him why it was necessary.  I wanted him to know what he was taking and why, but I did not want to over load him with too much information.

After reading a few of the books I recommended in my last story,  Explaining ADHD & LD to Your Child, and discussing ADHD with my son, he understood what ADHD was.  He new he was fidgety and unable to sit still due to his ADHD.  He realized that his lack of concentration was not his fault.  He also discovered that other kids take medication for these (and other ADHD related) problems.

Learning that his daily pill would help him better control his body, help him sit still and pay closer attention was all the information he needed.  Now, five years later, he reminds me if I forget to give it to him.  He will be the first to tell you that he "feels better when I take my medicine."

If you are unsure how best to discuss this issue with your ADHD child, I invite you to read the online articles I have listed below.  They offer some wonderful tips on how best to do so.
