Making the most of an annual check up

I had my annual check up today. I always try to schedule it close to Valentine's Day so that I'll remember (as an act of love). I was a little late this year, but I made it.

A few things that I thought were notable:

1) Preparing: For the first time, I kept a list with me for the month or so prior. When I felt something, read something, or heard about something that might be applicable for my discussion with the doctor, I wrote it down. Not sure how you are, but I always feel a little rushed and can't help wanting to please the doctor on some level (like getting a good report) - so I forget some things when I'm on the spot. Plus, sometimes things come and go - and because they might not seem notable later, it's good to write them down in the moment. This list made our conversation very fruitful.

2) Tests: Which brings me to my next point. I've gained a bit of weight, feel more forgetful than normal and am a little tired. So, they are testing my thyroid to see if everything is normal. I should know the results by early next week. Also got cholesterol checked - since it has been pretty good, I only get checked every 2-3 years. And that was it...just a little blood work and I was on my way.

3) Speed: I must comment that my doctor's office was very speedy in terms of getting me in right away and seeing me promptly - even the lab work was quick. I didn't feel rushed. But I did feel respected in terms of how they are using my time. I wish all doctors managed their offices like in this manner.

4) Online access: And as the grand finale...my doctor's office is now managing things online! It's pretty great. I can book my appointment, communicate via email, make notes on my account, get test results quickly, etc. Very exciting and convenient. If you are looking for a great general practitioner experience, I'd recommend the Seattle UW Belltown Clinic.

Here's to good health!

Thanks, Rosie! This is timely for me as I've been meaning to schedule a physical myself. I've also been reading lately about testing for c-reactive protein. Dr. Mark Liponis, the author of Ultrlongevity and Ultraprevention, and the medical director at Canyon Ranch is very big on this test. It's a measure of inflammation in your system and an early indicator of many health and wellness issues. I've bookmarked some resources about it.
