Help Stop Ignorance about Autism: Share Your Story

WOR-AM radio commentator, Michael Savage, offers no apology for his comments on his show last week calling “99%” of children with autism “a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out.” Savage continued to say, "What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, you idiot.'"

Savage’s comments denigrate recent movements to educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community, including increasing NIH funding for autism-related research by 80% since 2001.  Wendy Fournier of the National Autism Association, calls Savage's comments "way, way, way over the line and cruel." Fournier continued to say that she is hoping to educate Savage by speaking on Mark Masters of Talk Radio Network program. "I'm hoping to make him see the reality of what these kids are facing…You can't fix it by telling a kid to shut up. It's like telling a kid with cancer to stop being sick."

Peter Bell, executive vice president of Autism Speaks, said we should do our best to ignore Savage’s antiquated remarks while Evelyn Ain, a mother whose 8-year old son has been diagnosed with autism, organized a protest outside WOR-AM yesterday.

Trusera would like to show our support for families affected by autism. We’re asking you, our members of the Community to help us spread the truth about autism by sharing your experiences with autism or posting your responses to Savage’s ignorant tirade against children and families affected by autism.
