Do we need more events for children with autism?

There's a trend in Kansas City that might be coming to a theater near you: cultural and entertainment events just for special needs children. Think movie theaters with lights on, quieter sound, and no rules about keeping quiet and staying in your seat. Or restaurants with secluded areas that serve a no-allergen buffet.  Here's part of a story published in the Kansas City Star today:

This particular screening of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” had been tailored to people with autism-spectrum disorders and their family members. Because of their sometimes peculiar behaviors, as well as their hypersensitivity to certain sights and sounds, children with autism-spectrum disorders often are kept at home. It’s easier than dealing with the reactions.

Is there something similar in your city? How was it?
