I think that is a great idea.I have aspergers and I am 28.I still have problems showing empathy to people who are in need of it.I have all got problems with reading the looks on peoples faces and just showing that I care.Some times it can be really hard not having any feeling.But over the years I have gat better at some things.I do agree with the story.

One thing I have learned from raising an AS kid and socializing with many others is that each one is different, and each one has (comparatively) different deficiencies. 

The important point which is lost in the rant is that AS doesn't necessarily inhibit the ability to display or genuinely feel empathy, rather, it can limit the ability to recognize a need for it. 

It's recognizable in children, especially.  My AS son can spill milk on his NT little brother and think nothing of it - but if I tell him that now "little brother is upset", he picks up on the verbal clue and has a fairly broad range.

Thank you for your comments. It was never my intention to offend you. I was sharing content I found on another Web site, and I was interested in hearing opinions from our diverse community.

So Aspies lack empathy ? Who bullies whom ? Who ostracizes whom ? Who harrasses innocent strangers for no reason ? We all know the answer to that. Before NTs accuse Aspies of lacking empathy, they should look at themselves. NTs reserve their empathy for those who speak, act, dress, think, and enjoy themselves like they do. Their "social skills" are often hypocrisy, since they use their "superior" conversational skills to connect with others who'll join them in cruelty against anyone deemed "different". At least Aspies are live-and-let-live people, who always identify with the marginalized and oppressed. ( I wonder why that is ? )

 It's appalling that such insulting falsehoods about Aspies are still circulating.  ( Very ironic accusations, when one considers the way NTs treat Aspies, versus vice-versa. )

I am a very proud, self-labelled Aspie. ( No, not self-"diagnosed". Despite NT efforts to pathologize us, we do not have a disorder; syndrome, etc.. We are neurologically different, that's all. Just remember who most of the world's geniusses are. ) I'm also proud that I've escaped being brainwashed into deeming myself defective and/or evil, despite the NT world's best efforts.

 I'll not post here again, or even visit this site anymore. I registered here solely to defend my community against NTs' "lack-of-empathy" accusations. Having done so, I have no more to say.
