Glad nursing home insight was helpful. Thanks for feedback! Among my many learnings about nursing homes, I learned to be proactive in getting the activities director to keep Mom as involved as possible.

Also, at each of the two nursing homes Mom was at, I provided a written, detailed multi-page story / summary of Mom's history, interests and strengths, and shared it with many employees (social worker, charge nurses, activities team, manager, rehabilitation team) to help them better understand her as an individual, giving them important resonating context, so they could better understand why they should do certain things with Mom. Many more details than their surveys pinpointed, to make her truly memorable.

For example, I explained that Mom loved to read. In fact, her old house had thousands of books in it on hundreds of diverse topics. I really tried hard to make sure Mom was never bored, so I repeatedly asked that they keep an assortment of reading materials with her at all times.

Another example: I explained Mom really loved to walk. In fact, she had hiked 6,700 miles with the hiking club. (I put her mileage patches on display in her room, to get the aids talking.) That helped motivate the rehab team to really reteach her to walk, and encouraged the assistants to encourage her as well.

I do know of parents who choose to stop their child's medication in the summertime, however I am not one of them. That is what I was referring to....it's always the parents and doctors decision to make. Definitely not mine.

Checking out your blog ... one thought ... I would caution you about telling parents if their child has mild ADHD that they can stop giving meds during the summer. That's a decision only the doctor can make in conjunction with the parents. I only mention that due to liability issues. Further, if a child stops taking meds, it takes a while for the medication to enter their system good once they begin taking it again. That up and down isn't necessarily good for a person's body. I know you don't mean any harm and you go on to say that you don't stop your child's meds during the summer, I would just be concerned that some parents may not read further.
