Question What can a pre-diabetic use to sweeten food and drinks besides artificial sweeteners?

I heard some things today about what pre-diabetics can do to keep from having diabetes and one of those things was no artificial sweeteners.  I don't really understand why, but am willing to try anything to keep from being diabetic.  Does anyone know of other, safe sweeteners that can be used, or does one have to give up sweets alltogether?
