Learning how to be single again after a relationship

Post by Jordan Toplen

There is no better way to describe a breakup other than that they completely suck, regardless of whether you have come out of a 30 year marriage or a 6 month relationship, there is little to feel good about when a relationship dies. You will naturally feel all of the emotions under the sun from anger, rage, jealousy, guilt, resentment and loneliness, but this doesn’t have to define who you are. When you break up with someone you follow the same emotional path as those who are grieving a loss, take your time to get through it and then remember that there is life beyond the break up. Once you are ready to get back into the saddle of single life, here is how to enjoy it.

Get Out There

When you are in a relationship you are always conscious of someone else and let’s be honest that can often impact our ability to have a good time when we go out. Now that you no longer have to worry about this it is time to go out and have some fun. This is not to say that you have to go out looking for a new partner, on the contrary in fact, that time will come, this is just about getting out there with friends to a movie, a concert, a night out on the town, without having to let someone know where you are or what you are doing.

Quality Friend Time

During a relationship our friendships can change a great deal, some people you may lose touch with, with others your friendship may turn into a ‘couple’ friendship and some you may simply not spend the time with that you would like. Now is the time to reconnect with your friends and give them the time which you couldn’t during your relationship. Whether we like it or not priorities do change when we get involved with someone and now that you’re single its time to prioritize your nearest and dearest.

Hooking Up

It is never a good idea to jump out of one relationship and into another, but that is not to say that you can’t still enjoy someone’s company, even if just for a little while. A hook-up is not a bad idea and when it is with the right person it can give you some much needed fun, a confidence boost and that important physical contact with someone which we all crave from time to time. A no strings hook-up now and again will help you move on into single life.

Alone Time

When you re in a relationship it can be difficult to get time on your own, after the break up you probably won’t want to be alone but eventually you need to find the way to enjoy your own company. Whether it is pampering yourself, watching a movie, writing, reading, exercising or a hobby, spending time on your own is great fun and you should start learning to love it.

When the sadness subsides, its time to start enjoying your new found single life.
